With its exhibition series “Intervention”, Galerie Ruberl invites young artists to create a dialogue between their work and pieces from the gallery’s collection. The encounter between different generations and artistic positions creates new perspectives and opens up unfamiliar viewpoints on familiar works.

In this edition, Irena Pejčić poses the questions: What does it mean to depict a body? And whose gaze determines what becomes visible in the process? For Pejčić, these questions serve as the starting point for her artistic practice. Through photography, installation, and sculpture, she explores the body as a site of experience, social attribution, and resistance.

For this Intervention, the artist has selected works from three of her series: Vulvae, Cycle, and Lust. The juxtaposition of her works with those by Arnulf Rainer, Michael Horsky, Franz Ringel, Hermann Nitsch, and others — curated by Irena Pejčić — reveals different approaches to the representation of the body. What connects them is a shared interest in the body as an artistic medium. At the same time, the various regimes of gaze under which bodies are represented, perceived, and evaluated come to the fore.
